Make Yourself More Valuable

A new year is upon us and I’m not a big fan of resolutions. The reason being is that I feel that a person should continuously evaluate themselves to find ways to improve instead of waiting for January 1st to take a stand. So my question for you is this…..What will you do to add value to yourself each month?

Have you ever felt frustrated because the schmuck down the hall that has the same job that you do, makes a lot more money than you? I know that I have felt this way. You can say to yourself that you work harder, work longer hours, and are willing to do the things that no one else wants to do. This may make you feel validated but it only adds frustration and dissatisfaction to your life. The real focus should be on how you can add value to yourself so that you can get promoted to a better position or at minimum, get paid more come review time.

If you are not looking for ways to add more skill to yourself, more training, certifications or education, you are only wasting time and energy by comparing yourself to others in your workgroup. Just because you have been at your job for years doesn’t mean that your value has increased. What new thing have you learned to make the organization better? Get busy looking for training in your area to validate your new skills so that you can get compensated accordingly!

Be Blessed,

Patrick Hurd
