Is it just me, or did I wake up one morning and was no longer cool enough for my kids to relate to? As a parent, a real parent, we all want the same thing for our children. We want them to have a much better life than ours, we want them to go farther, climb higher, and accomplish more than we have been able to.
Somehow, our good intentions can be viewed as trying to control their lives. In the 2001 classic song, it’s said that parents just don’t understand that us kids are going to make some mistakes. The fact of the matter is that we fully realize that our kids are going to make mistakes. The kids fail to u swear and that those mistakes have life altering consequences. You do not get to just delete the mistakes and start over. Those minor mistakes have major implications that can take decades to rebound from…and that’s if you’re lucky.
I remember when I was younger, I would hang around older adults because I was looking for shortcuts and pitfalls. My plan was to get further in life than my parents and grandparents. I felt that I could listen to their experiences and simply not make their mistakes. Today, the young people are not interested in old wisdom. Some feel as if our experiences are no longer applicable to today’s times.
There is an old quote that says…” a smart man learns from his mistakes but a wise man will learn from the mistakes of others”. YouTube, Facebook, and Google has equipped our young generation with enough knowledge that they cannot accept anymore. The sad part is when they get in trouble, they miraculously find their way to mom and dads front door. As parents, we have had experiences that make us qualified to give direction. The only thing that the younger generation should consider is that we may know a thing or two and that we didn’t live this long without learning a few things about life.
As a parent, if you are experiencing a similar experience, take comfort in knowing that prayer does change things. Sometimes, you have to place them in Gods hands which is the safest place to put them and continue to pray for their awakening. Do not give up on them but instead, continue to love them with every fiber of your being and keep them lifted in prayer!
