Blog Post #3

In the ever-evolving world of information technology, cybersecurity has become a hot topic in this career field.  Cybersecurity consists of offensive and defensive actions to protect computer networks.  According to career forecast, there will be approximately 1.8 million job vacancies by the year 2023.  These are high paying jobs that offers career advancement opportunities as well.  Several of my friends and relatives have asked me how to go about getting involved in the information technology field.  I decided to write this blog post to share my experiences on this subject.

The first thing that a person must do if they want to enter the information technology field is to identify what area of the field they would like to operate.  For example, I.T. consists of networking, systems, programming, security, etc.  I decided that I wanted to be on the security side of the house because I enjoy hacking and protecting my customers from cyber bullies.  This characteristic is true in other areas of my life which is why I serve in the military.  I have the pleasure of protecting and defending my country from bullies and threats in that aspect as well.  I recommend that all potential prospects should focus on an area that is passionate for them and not spread themselves too thin by trying to learn everything.  This is a near impossible task because technology changes so quickly.

The second suggestion is to get educated on the area of interest that you have decided on.  There are several methods to go about educating yourself such as online training, formal college education, technology boot camps, and even application-based training that can be done from your smart phone.  Platforms such as Udemy, Coursera, and LinkedIn Learning are just a few of the options available to self-educate yourself.  A friend of mine recently shared with me that he spends an average of 25-35 hours per week on social media and YouTube.  For the same amount of time, a prospect can obtain several certifications to validate his technology skills and add value to him/herself as opposed to wasting time on wasteful internet surfing.

The final thing that is required to get into the information technology space is to apply for a job in the field.  Technology jobs require a different approach in order to obtain employment.  Since it is a technology-based role, a candidate must demonstrate technology fundamentals.  The first and most obvious requirement is to have a profile on LinkedIn or Monster because those are the platforms potential employers search to find their next hire.  If you have no presence, it will be difficult to get a job because paper applications are a thing of the past.  LinkedIn for example is a division of Microsoft Corp. and they can run filters on their database to gather candidates that fit their criteria.  If you have no presence, you will not receive consideration for employment.  Make sure that you have a high quality, professional photo to attach to your profile as employers like to gather as much information about their prospects prior to extending an interview.  I have listed four of the most important steps to take if you want to get into information technology, so I wish you the best of luck in your search.
